Dr. VanderWall and his team are proud to participate in the Smiles Change Lives program. Every day, Dr. VanderWall helps children and teens experience the confidence that results from having a smile they love. In fact, it’s one of his favorite parts of being an orthodontist. Unfortunately, there are families who can’t afford orthodontic treatment, including those right here in the Triangle area. Because Dr. VanderWall believes every child deserves the opportunity to receive quality orthodontic care and the confidence that comes with it, he partnered with Smiles Change Lives to donate treatment to children in need.
What is
Smiles Change Lives?
In 1997, the Virginia Brown Community Orthodontic Partnership was established as a community-based orthodontic program to help kids whose families could not afford the full cost of braces receive orthodontic treatment. Now known as Smiles Change Lives, it has evolved into a national organization and the nation’s leader in providing access to orthodontic care for low-income families. Nearly 12,000 children have received life-changing orthodontic treatment through the program.
The organization believes in promoting increased self-esteem and better oral health for kids in need of orthodontic treatment. Smiles Change Lives has a unique model where they match qualified children with orthodontists like Dr. VanderWall who are willing to donate their services. Care isn’t completely free. Each family contributes a set fee to Smiles Change Lives, so that program can use the funds to recruit more orthodontists. In a sense, every family is “paying it forward” for future patients.
Can I Participate in
Smiles Change Lives?
Smiles Change Lives chooses qualified children to receive orthodontic care for a low cost based on a number of factors, including income. If chosen to participate in the program, families will have to abide by the rules of Smiles Change Lives and contribute a fee that the organization will use to recruit more orthodontists to participate in the program.
